Testimonials
"I found that the students were better prepared for class and understood the material covered in the course better that if they had just been reading section in a textbook. I know this because the in-class lecture became more of a conversation between the students and me that in previous semesters."

How to use the Tomlinson Videos

Instructors

These video segments have been used by instructors in many ways to enhance their classroom experience and increase student retention of economics material:

  • As a way to spend more class time focused on applications
You can assign the videos before class to help prepare your students for in-class discussion. The auto-graded quizzes at the end of the segment are a good way of monitoring compliance. This can enable you to spend less time during class on the technical aspects of the topic and more time addressing questions and applying the concepts.

  • As tutorials and extra student support
If you have students who are having difficulty with certain concepts and may be falling behind in the course, suggest that they watch the video for that concept. Students can watch the video, review the lecture notes and transcript, then take the quiz. They can send the results of the quiz to you, so you can see if they have mastered the concept or need more practice.

  • As 24/7 office hours
Often, students cite schedule conflicts as the reason for not using instructors’ office hours. The Tomlinson videos can be used any time, any where – they’re like 24/7 office hours.

  • Teaching Online
Professors often tell us that they wish they had more “meat” in their online course. The Tomlinson videos have proved to be an excellent extra resource for online students especially in courses where the class never meets in a lecture.
